Busboys and Poets is a cultural hub for artists, activists, writers, thinkers, and dreamers. Why the name? The name Busboys and Poets refers to American poet Langston Hughes, who worked as a busboy at the Wardman Park Hotel in the 1920s, prior to gaining recognition as a poet.

Where did busboys and poets start?
This is where it all began, on 14th & V streets NW, in 2005. Our founder Andy Shallal was active in the addition of the name “Langston Hughes Way” on V street between 13th and 14th streets to pay homage to the poet Hughes, where the inspiration for the name Busboys and Poets comes from.
