The main staples of Hindu diet include grains such as rice, wheat and millet, a multitude of legumes such as mung or chickpeas, dairy products obtained from cows and water buffalo, a variety of spices, and vegetables, many of them region specific.

Masala Kheema - Dry Spicy Minced Meat

This simple meat dish comes together in as little as 35 minutes using any ground meat you prefer. Chicken, lamb, pork, goat, and beef all work well. A flavorful blend of garlic, onion, ginger, and spices like garam masala all give it a lovely fragrance and a little spice. Serve it with naan, other flatbread, or white rice as a main dish.

Basic Chicken Curry

Making curry the authentic way, by blending spices yourself, results in a much more robust, fragrant dish than store-bought curry sauce or pre-blended powder. This chicken curry comes together in 45 minutes and requires very little active time. Serve with chapati or boiled rice.

Mint-Cucumber Raita

In just minutes, you can have this cooling cucumber, mint, and yogurt sauce on the table. A refreshing palate-cleanser and foil for spicy dishes, raita also tastes great as a dip with pita chips or bread, and alongside curries or other mains, often with chutney and pickles.

Baingan Aloo Ki Subji (Eggplant and Potatoes)

Eggplant, potatoes, and tomatoes make up Baingan aloo ki subji, a flavorful vegetable curry that vegetarians and vegans can enjoy. Like many Indian dishes, the blend of spices tastes even better a day or so afterward so the flavors have time to get to know each other. Pair it with hot chapatis and cool raita and chutney.

Bhajias (Pakoras)

Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, fried vegetable pakoras make the most of just about any vegetables of your choice. Try them with potato, cauliflower, spinach leaves, onion, or paneer. Mix and match what you have with some sweet and spicy chutney for dipping.

South Indian Lemon Rice

Lemon rice often appears on South Indian tables, either eaten alone or with raita, yogurt, chutney or kosambari (a type of salad). Use it to give leftover rice new life, too.

Andey Ki (Egg Curry)

Several different styles for making egg curry exist all over the country, but this North Indian recipe makes a great start for a beginner cook. Make the gravy ahead of time and freeze it, so all of you have to do is make rice, boil the eggs, and heat it all up for a quick and simple comfort dish.

What makes Indian food unique?

Indian dishes have a well-deserved reputation for featuring complex flavor profiles. Some of this is due to the cooking style's generous use of spices (it's not uncommon for some dishes to have as many as 25 or 30 different spices), but that's only part of the equation.

Is Indian food spicy?

Spices are big in Indian cooking, but spiced doesn't always necessarily translate to spicy. While it's true that you can find plenty of fire in some Indian entrees, there are plenty of dishes to suit those who can't stand the heat. And, perhaps, more importantly, most restaurants are used to accommodating Western palates.

How to read an Indian food menu

If you've never eaten Indian food before, you might only be familiar with one dish: curry. But curry is actually a style of cooking, and any Indian restaurant is likely to have a vast number of different curries, each containing different ingredients and flavor profiles.

What Are the Different Types of Indian Food?

India is a huge continent and, as such, there are many many different styles of Indian cooking. When choosing an Indian restaurant, be sure to inquire as to what style of Indian cooking they specialize in.

Which dishes are best for beginners?

Still feeling intimidated? The following dishes are standard at most Indian restaurants and won't intimidate western palates.

While the corpus of Indian cuisine is incredibly vast, the menus at Indian restaurants primarily feature Mughlai cuisine, a category of north Indian food

Let’s get the big flashing misnomer out of the way: Not every stew at an Indian restaurant is a curry. It’s understandable how it’s become shorthand for “meat-filled spicy sauce to dip roti in,” but that’s a gross generalization for a cuisine that’s breathtaking in its diversity.

Chicken tikka masala

The newly refreshed, 2021 AirPods Pro with MagSafe charging get their first big price cut.

B utter chicken

Butter chicken is the classic Indian truck stop dish that’s as straightforward as it sounds: Chicken gets cooked in a tomato and butter gravy (or literally just butter) until the meat is fall-off-the-bone soft.

Vindaloo

Vindaloo is a south Indian dish with many variations. The version you’ll likely see in an Indian restaurant will include some kind of meat base cooked with red chile s, vinegar, garlic, and sometimes potatoes. In India, the dish is known for its unmitigated spiciness. But at your neighborhood Indian joint, chances are the heat has been tamed.

Chana masal a

The name tells you everything you need to know: Chana = chickpeas. Masala = spices. Chana masala, which happens to be a very popular street food in northern India, consists of boiled chickpeas that have been cooked in a tomato-onion gravy.

Dal makhani

You may think that a lentil stew would be a healthy alternative to the otherwise rich offerings at a lot of Indian restaurants, but in the case of dal makhani, you would be wrong.

Korma

Korma is meat (usually chicken or lamb) braised in a garlic- and ginger-spiked yogurt sauce. It’s cooked using the low-and-slow method so that the yogurt doesn’t curdle, yielding a tender, mild stew.

Tips to Plan an Indian Party MENU

A bit of planning is key to having everything under control. Gather the following information from your guests 8-10 days before the party:

Indian Drinks

No party is complete without a signature drink or two. Here are two popular choices in my home:

Lentils & Beans

Typically, I serve at least one dal (lentil) dish, or one beans curry (chickpeas or kidney beans). Here are the recipes for Dals, Chana, and Rajma:

Non-Vegetarian Entrees

Unless a majority of guests in my party are vegetarian, I often include one of the following dishes in my menu. Here is a list of popular, restaurant-style entrees that I make in the Instant Pot.

Rice and Biryani

Rice pairs really well with most Indian dinner recipes. Instead of serving just plain basmati rice, I like to serve a slightly dressed-up dish like cumin rice or saffron rice. You can also serve a biryani, which serves almost as an additional entree.

Indian Desserts & Sweets

Depending on the occasion and type of party you are hosting, you can serve a classic Indian dessert like halwa, along with Indian flavored ice cream, like Paan, or Kesar Pista. If it's a Diwali or Holi party, you can also serve sweet meals like burfi, ladoo, or gujiya.

Sides and Condiments

Most Indian appetizers are served with fresh Cilantro Chutney. And nearly all Indian dinners are served with pickle, and a yogurt side dish, called Raita. Yogurt adds a cooling contrast to the spicy curries. Here are some simple and easy recipes for popular sides and condiments:
