Travel on the PCT is strenuous work. You’ll find yourself eating a significant number of calories to sustain the effort. Most people opt for lightweight calorie dense foods that can handle the lack of refrigeration.
Can You thru-hike the PCT without eating meat?
Many people have successfully thru-hiked the PCT without eating meat. While fresh vegetable selection can be limited, you can still eat a quality diet on the trail. You might be surprised how long some vegetables will last. We recommend eating your fill of fresh fruits and vegetables in towns and on the first few days of your trail leg.
Can you eat gluten on the Pacific Crest Trail?
Small stores along the trail offer mostly gluten items. Foraging and hunting can be enjoyable pastimes, but they are not a reliable source of calories for people aiming to make miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Restrictions and a paucity of game and edibles mean that you can at best hope for an occasional treat.

Penn Central features pizza-by-the-slice, grab-n-go salads, sandwiches, and entrees. Our campus convenience store carries a wide range of bottled beverages, frozen food, canned goods, snacks, and toiletries.
