Sweet and Sour Pork

Extremely popular outside China, sweet and sour dishes are believed to date back to the Tang Dynasty that ruled the country between 618 and 907. The main ingredients of the stir-fried dish include pieces of pork tenderloin, onion, pineapple and bell peppers.

Ginger Beef

Not many realize that ginger beef is a Canadian/Chinese invention. It’s generally believed that it was first made at the Silver Inn in Calgary, Alberta in the mid-1970s. While ginger beef recipes vary, the so-called original Alberta version is made with deep-fried beef strips coated in sweet ginger sauce.

Wonton

Chop suey is an American Chinese dish. While the recipe for chop suey is by no means set in stone, at its most basic the dish is a mix of chopped-up meat and vegetables. While the recipe might be quite simple, the trick to making the dish is timing — it’s important that all the ingredients are combined in exactly the right order.

Beef Chow Fun 干炒牛河

Beef chow fun is made with wide rice noodles, as opposed to chow mein, which is made with egg noodles. Popular in yum cha restaurants in Guang Dong, beef chow fun can be prepared in a variety of ways. However, it always comes with marinated slices of beef.

Braised Beef with Radish

Comparable to a beef stew, braised beef with radish is composed of gelatinous, melt-in-the-mouth pieces of beef and tender chunks of radish. All this is served in a thin gravy over rice. The braised beef with radish recipe usually uses beef brisket or flank, which is then slow-cooked in a pot until tender.

Mouth-Watering Chicken 口水鸡

Despite the fact that the literal translation of this dish in Chinese is “saliva chicken,” mouth-watering chicken delivers exactly what it promises — delicious pieces of chicken. The chicken usually goes through short poaching and icing to ensure that the meat is tender yet has a firm texture.
