Is Diamond Jacks still good?
Childhood Favorite. I have been going to Diamond Jacks since I was a kid. It has moved since then, but it is still the same great food. Good soups, sandwiches, and it is cheap. Fast for lunch and friendly waitstaff. Don't let the decor throw you off! It is worth the oddness!
Does Diamond Jacks accommodate people with allergies?
Does not accommodate people with allergies. We had been eating at Diamond Jacks for 40 years and the food has always been excellent. As our children came and grew up the owners (especially the husband of the couple) have been very friendly. He never failed to come to our table for a hello and to comment about how much the kids had grown, etc. There was more than one discussion over the years about our son's allergies (his fingers would split open after being exposed to certain foods). We vowed never to return to Diamond Jack's after our college-age son ordered a sandwich with "none of the mayonnaise type stuff." When he received his sandwich, it had the mayonnaise spread on it and he asked them to take it back. He explained that it would be okay to just exchange the top piece of bread and the top piece of meat; he even said it would be okay if they just wiped the meat off that had the mayonnaise on it. The waitress (and later the wife of the owner) told us that since he had asked for two kinds of meat he had ordered a special order sandwich and he would have to eat it as ordered. She then proceeded to tell us that the spread was not actually mayonnaise but was, in fact, a special spread. We told her that we had ordered it without the spread and that it has eggs in it and would cause our son to have respiratory problems. She said she didn't care and that he would have to eat it. All we wanted was to have one piece of bread replaced. He was willing to eat the meat because it could have been wiped off (there was a LOT of the sandwich spread on the bread). They were very unreasonable and the owner went so far as to tell us that she didn't care if it would send him to the hospital we would have to pay for what he ordered. At that, we got up and left the restaurant and didn't pay for any of the food we ordered. And, they lost a life-long customer. My wife wrote them a letter after the incident and we received no response. An apology by the husband would have done wonders. Instead, we prefer to share with people that unless you want to eat exactly what they bring to you - even if it is NOT what you ordered - then you had better not go to Diamond Jack's.

I have been a Diamond Jack's fan almost my entire life. The first DJ opened in 1965 in the Country Club Plaza at 51st and Harvard. It was around in the back, where Crawpappy's is now. The 1880's saloon motif has never changed, although the ownership did once.
